Phenolic resins are the first completely synthetic polymers obtained by the reaction of phenol or substituted phenol with formaldeyde. They were the first resins to be commercialized. The most common resin is called Bakelite, the first thermosetting plastic (a plastic that does not soften when heated).  The liquid phenolic resin is a sticky, elastic, viscous, product and it can be used as paint or mastic. It also has a lot of uses in  the industrial field.  It is red/brown colored and transparent.
