The mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2. Pyrite is considered the most common of the sulfide minerals. It is usually found associated with other sulfides or oxides in quartz veins, sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock as well as in coal beds and as a replacement mineral in fossils.

It is a polymorph of marcasite; it is a semiconductor, it decomposes with nitric acid, it is easily fusible, it is not malleable (unlike gold). The pyrite is used for the production of sulfuric acid for a variety of uses in the chemical industry, it is also extracted useful sulfur for fertilizers, cellulose manufacture, rubber vulcanization, pesticides, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products.

The pyrite is unstable in the natural environment: in nature it is always being created or being destroyed. Iron pyrite exposed to air and water decomposes into iron oxides and sulfate.
